What is Stress?

We have all experienced it. We all know what it feels like. I find stress to be one of those "je ne sais quoi" experiences. Difficult to define in 30 seconds or less.

"Stress" on humans was was coined by Hans Selye in 1936, who defined it as “the non-specific response of the body to any demand for change”.

Both experimental and clinical research confirm that the sense of having little or no control is always distressful – and that’s what stress is all about. Because it was apparent that most people viewed stress as some unpleasant threat, Selye subsequently had to create a new word, stressor, to distinguish stimulus from response.

"THE SENSE OF HAVING LITTLE OR NO CONTROL IS ALWAYS DISTRESSFUL"

Today the definition of stress has involved to the following : Stress is “a condition or feeling experienced when a person perceives that demands exceed the personal and social resources the individual is able to mobilize.”

That gets a little chewy.

What that means is, if a person has demands placed on them, that they cannot escape from, that exceed their personal ability to meet.

That is stress.

However, stress can be helpful and good when it motivates or mobilizes people to accomplish more. This is called “Eustress” which can lead to increased productivity – up to a point, after which things go rapidly downhill.

Every person has their threshold or tolerance level for stress. And it is different for each and every person.

Signals also differ for each of us and can be so subtle that they are often ignored until it is too late. Usually, others are aware that you may be headed for trouble before you are. Once you cross that personal threshold – that’s where Burnout or Shutdown live.

Chronic stress has been linked to early deaths, as a factor for migraines, headaches, heart disease, heart attacks, diabetes, cancer, asthma, autoimmune diseases, and countless other disorders and illnesses.

I help people raise their threshold for stress by helping their Nervous System become more flexible and resilient by taking a unique look at your nervous system function. I assess what stage of stress you are experiencing, and work with you to address the root causes and ways you can incorporate simple lifestyle changes to take control of your life and find joy and peace again.

The first step is scheduling a Free Meet and Greet to get to know each other and see if we would be a good match.
